An MOU between AAU and Staffordshire University in the fields of research and Artificial Intelligence

The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at Al-Ain University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Staffordshire University’s Smart Systems, AI, and Cybersecurity Research Centre (UK). This collaboration aims to advance research and development and promote knowledge exchange and technology transfer between the two Centres.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Ghaleb El-Refae, President of Al-Ain University, and Prof. Elhadj Benkhelifa, Director of the Smart Systems, AI and Cybersecurity Research Centre from Staffordshire University. The signing ceremony was attended by Prof. Haythem Bany Salameh, Dean of Research and Director of Al-Ain AI research center and Dr. Qutaibah Althebyan, the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Under this MoU, both institutions will collaborate on joint research projects and explore avenues for research staff and student exchange to develop between the two research centers. The collaboration will also involve joint workshops, seminars, and conferences to disseminate research findings and promote knowledge exchange among the academic and industrial communities.

Professor Haythem Bany Salameh, Dean of Research at Al-Ain University and the Director of the AI research center said “It was a great pleasure to Host Professor Benkhelifa at Al-Ain University, UAE. During his visit, we discussed a number of areas for collaboration, some of which are already in action.”

Elhadj Benkhelifa is a distinguished academic and researcher with nearly two decades of experience in leadership roles, focused on pioneering solutions for digital transformation technologies. As a full Professor of Computer Science and Digital Innovations at Staffordshire University, he leads the Professoriate, significantly contributing to the University's strategies in teaching, research, and enterprise. Benkhelifa founded the Smart Systems, AI, and Cybersecurity Research Centre (SSAICS), steering its growth as a hub for interdisciplinary research in digital technologies, and previously directed the Mobile Fusion Applied Research Centre, enhancing its research portfolio. Before his tenure at Staffordshire University, Benkhelifa's career spanned roles from a lead researcher on an EPSRC project at Cranfield University to a lecturer at the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol. He earned his PhD in Artificial-Life from UWE, Bristol Robotics Lab, and worked as a software developer at ATE Communications Ltd. His research spans cloud computing, data analytics, AI, digital transformation, and cybersecurity, leading numerous national and transnational projects and supervising many PhDs. Benkhelifa has a strong commitment to open access research and co-founded IBScientific Publishing to support scientists from low-income countries. Additionally, he holds significant roles outside academia, including Director at Yotta Laboratories Ltd and involvement in various boards and committees, underlining his influence in the field of computer science and digital innovation.
